Yuhu Village (Jade Lake Village) / 玉湖村

Known as the 'First Village under the Snow Mountain,' Yuhu is the closest traditional Naxi village to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at approximately 2,900-3,200 meters elevation. The village is famous for its unique stone architecture—houses, roads, and bridges are all built from local 'monkey head' stones. It was home to Austrian-American explorer Joseph Rock for 27 years (1922-1949), who introduced Naxi culture to the Western world. The village features Longnu Lake (Dragon Maiden Lake) with stunning snow mountain reflections.

See authentic Naxi stone architecture unlike anywhere else. Visit Joseph Rock's former residence, enjoy snow mountain reflections at Long Lake, experience Dongba paper making, and ride horses along the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The village offers a more authentic, less commercialized experience than other tourist areas.

Tips

Village entry is free but an environmental protection fee of CNY 30 may apply. Sightseeing shuttle from visitor center: CNY 39 round trip. Joseph Rock's Former Residence: CNY 10-25. Take the tourism shuttle from Lijiang Old Town (CNY 10) or taxi (30-40 minutes, CNY 60-80). Try the famous Snow Mountain fish tofu and Naxi ham chicken copper pot. Rooftop cafés offer stunning snow mountain views.
